Mock Trial
Participation on the High School's Mock Trial team de-mystifies the operation of law, court procedures and legal system; improve communication and leadership skills (listening, speaking, writing, reading and analyzing); bring law to life through active preparation in practice and competitions.
The Mock Trial Workbook is distributed to participating schools by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation. It contains the modified Rules of Evidence as well as the fictional fact pattern which serves as the basis for the year’s case. The competitions begin in January against other schools in Atlantic County. The county champion then advances to the regional competition. Regional champions compete for the state title in March.
There are no try-outs to be on the mock trial team. Everyone who comes to a meeting is welcome to be a part of the preparation team. However, a maximum of ten students are allowed to compete in the actual competitions. Those students will be chosen from the team members who excel during practice and show exceptional dedication and commitment to the team.
Practices begin in early September after school for approximately two hours. For students who participate in fall sports, other arrangements may be made during the season (i.e. lunch period).
This is a varsity activity and members are eligible to earn varsity letters. Mock on!
Number of meetings: On an as needed basis beginning in September
