Congratulations to April Students of the Month

Freshman: Ariella Mossman

(nominated by Ms. Reganato)

Ariella is in our inclusion Algebra 1 class and currently has an A average.  She is a pleasure to have in class and works hard to make sure she understands the material.  In the beginning of the year, she struggled with math and came in during our RTI period to get help and has completely done a 180 since then.  She hasn't needed to come get help, she is patient with others when working in groups, and this is an honor she would truly deserve and appreciate.

Lauren Waldman

(nominated by Mr. Lhulier)

As president of the freshman class, Lauren is an outstanding student leader that works tirelessly to provide the class of 2013 with an enjoyable high school experience. Her innovative ideas and dedication have helped provide her peers with class unity. Lauren also performed brilliantly in the spring production of the Wedding Singer. On top of the many activities that she is involved with, Lauren also excels academically and is an outstanding role model for her classmates. For her active role in our school community and her remarkable academic achievements, Lauren is well deserving of the student of the month honor.

Sophomore: Joanna Jelesnianski

(nominated by Mr. Lhulier)

Joanna has an outstanding work ethic and frequently contributes interesting comments to class discussions. In my Sophomore Honors English class, Joanna maintains one of the highest grade point averages and is quick to share her knowledge with other students unclear about concepts being addressed. While Joanna usually excels on all assignments, she is not grade focused. Joanna’s primary concern is to develop her knowledge and skills to the highest level possible. She tries to connect with literature on a personal level and her peers have benefited from the mature insights she is willing to share during class discussions.  For her outstanding work ethic, kindness to others, and drive to succeed — Joanna is deserving of the title of student of the month.

Junior: James Sundra

(nominated by Deborah Klipp)

James and his teammates recently had a first place finish in the Technology Student Association NJ State Electronic Game Design Competition.  James is an AP Computer Science student and is a leader in the classroom.  He sets a good example in the classroom.  He often explains programming concepts  to other students to help them.  I can always rely on James' problem solving abilities to solve complex computer programs.  Last year James' team placed second in the Electronic Game Design event and competed at the National Competition in Denver.  Unfortunately,  team did not place in the top 10, but it motivated James to enter the competition this year with a game that rocked the competition.  With the NJ first place finish we are planning on competing again at Nationals.  I have no doubt that the team will place in the top 10 and hopefully win the competition.
James is also a member of Stage Crew.  James and his team have dedicated many hours to putting together a set for this years play.  James is to be commended for his hard work and dedication to his goals.

(also nominated by Chuck Cole)

For his invaluable work with the Stage Crew and more specifically for their dedication, leadership, and accomplishments during this year’s production of The Wedding Singer
James is currently the Vice-President of the Stage Crew and held the position of Light Board Operator for The Wedding Singer.  While Light Board Operator James was able to manipulate 16 intelligent lighting fixtures along with over 85 conventional lighting fixtures on an unfamiliar control system with grace and ease. Drew, along with James spent many long hours in preparation for this year’s musical all while maintaining their academics, a task not easily accomplished.  While working on the musical they also somewhere found time to compete and take first place in the NJ State TSA competition in Electronic Game Design.  They are both supreme leaders able to not only delegate but also to teach the underclassman stage crew members.

Senior: Drew Whittaker

(nominated by Ms. Klipp)

Drew and his teammates recently had a first place finish in the Technology Student Association NJ State Electronic Game Design Competition.  Drew is an AP Computer Science student.  Last year Drew's team placed second in the Electronic Game Design event and competed at the National Competition.  Unfortunately the team did not place in the top 10, but it motivated Drew to enter the competition this year with a game that rocked the competition this year.  With the NJ first place finish we are planning on competing again at Nationals.  I have no doubt that the team will place in the top 10 and hopefully win the competition. Drew is also a member of Stage Crew.  Drew and his team have dedicated many hours to putting together a set for this years play.  Drew is to be commended for his hard work.

(also nominated by Mr. Chuck Cole)

I would like to nominate Drew Whittaker for his invaluable work with the Stage Crew and more specifically for their dedication, leadership, and accomplishments during this year’s production of The Wedding Singer.  Drew is currently President of the State Crew and was the Audio Engineer for the “Wedding Singer”.  Drew superbly operated 20 individual wireless microphones, controlling each microphone amplitude, pitch, tone, and  muting for a result that was well balanced with the orchestra and pleasurable to the audience.  Drew, along with James Sundra, spent many long hours in preparation for this year’s musical all while maintaining their academics, a task not easily accomplished.  While working on the musical they also somewhere found time to compete and take first place in the  NJ State TSA competition.  In Electronic Game Design.  They are both supreme leaders able to not only delegate but also teach the underclassman stage crew members. For these reasons, I feel that both James Sundra and Drew Whittaker both deserve to be recognized as April Students of the Month.

Calculating School Budget Tax Impact:

To calculate the 2010-11 Mainland School Budget's tax impact you divide your assessed home value (not property value) by $100 and multiply that by the tax levy (Linwood 9 cents, Northfield 6.5 cents and Somers Point 11 cents). It is important to note that all but 1 to 1.5 cents (depending on town) will go to funding building renovations/debt service related to the referendum passed last year. Below is a breakdown of the tax impact of the actual operating budget for every $100,000 of assessed home value:

-- In Linwood an annual increase of $15 or $1.25 per month

-- In Northfield an annual increase of $15 or $1.25 per month

-- In Somers Point an annual increase of $10 or $0.83 per month

If the budget is defeated, further cuts will likely impact class size and extra-curricular offerings.
