Under the direction of Rowan University student teacher Andrea Hawn, students in Tina Colombo’s freshmen English classes made Romeo and Juliet come to life at Mainland Regional High School this week. Some students chose to write and perform altered versions of Shakespeare’s text. LM and KW, in their 1960’s version, translate Shakespeare’s use of quarantine, “So, right, like, he was chillin’ at the sick house, so I, like, went inside to get him, but then the Man came and locked us in!”
Other students chose to create public service announcements, connecting modern issues to themes in Romeo and Juliet. Zach Winchell and Sam Ballard’s PSA on discrimination, in addition to offering insightful facts and details, makes the following connection: “Shakespeare knew that discrimination is something that is as natural to people as love, miscommunication between children and adults, and other themes he uses.” |
Mainland Regional High School is pleased to announce that its Teacher of the Year is Ms. Heather Savio. Ms. Savio is a Special Education teacher who has a long career at Mainland. She started as a student in the 80's and returned as a teacher in the 90's.

Pictured is Mrs. Savio being congratulated by MRHS Board of Education President John Medica.
Dr. Robert Blake, Principal, states, "There are so many teachers that do a terrific job the decision was difficult. Ms. Savio will now represent MRHS at the county level for County Teacher of the Year." Dr Russell Dever, Superintendent, says, "This is the highest honor and recognition bestowed on a teacher at MRHS. "
Ms. Savio was nominated by her fellow teachers and supported by statements from students. One student in particular wrote, " She made math understandable and even more importantly enjoyable. Being a student with a learning disorder, this meant a great deal to me. She would come up with clever diddies and methods of remembering what to do. 'Walk before you fly and you fly on the Y.' When I was in her class I started getting A's in math class for the first time." Others remarked that Ms. Savio gives up her prep periods to work with students, she inspires them to achieve success and practices differentiated instruction.
Ms. Savio is the proud wife of another MRHS graduate and mother of two. Her eldest will graduate MRHS in June and will attend Georgia Tech. Ms. Savio enjoys time with her family and her dog, traveling, and is an avid sports fan. |
